Tuberculosis mortality nearly halved since 1990

 The fight against tuberculosis is paying off, with this year’s death rate nearly half of what it was in 1990. Nevertheless, 1.5 million people died from TB in 2014. Most of these deaths could have been prevented, according to WHO’s Global tuberculosis report 2015, which was released today in Washington.

Ebola transmission in Liberia over. Nation enters 90-day intensive surveillance period

Liberia is free of Ebola transmission.

Today, 3 September 2015, WHO declares Liberia free of Ebola virus transmission in the human population. Forty-two days have passed since the second negative test on 22 July 2015 of the last laboratory-confirmed case. Liberia now enters a 90-day period of heightened surveillance.

World Hepatitis Summit harnesses global momentum to eliminate viral hepatitis

 Participants at the first-ever World Hepatitis Summit will urge countries to develop national programmes that can ultimately eliminate viral hepatitis as a problem of public health concern.
“We know how to prevent viral hepatitis, we have a safe and effective vaccine for hepatitis B, and we now have medicines that can cure people with hepatitis C and control hepatitis B infection,” said Dr Gottfried Hirnschall, Director of the WHO’s Global Hepatitis Programme. “Yet access to diagnosis and treatment is still lacking or inaccessible in many parts of the world. This summit is a wake-up call to build momentum to prevent, diagnose, treat - and eventually eliminate viral hepatitis as a public health problem.”

KOSPEN


Program "Komuniti Sihat Perkasa Negara" (KOSPEN) adalah inisiatif yang telah dicetuskan oleh YB Menteri Kesihatan Malaysia, Datuk Seri S. Subramaniam pada Julai 2013 dalam usaha menangani masalah peningkatan bebanan Penyakit Tidak Berjangkit (Non Communicable Disease, NCD) di negara ini. Inisiatif ini merupakan satu transformasi perkhidmatan kesihatan awam dalam usaha meningkatkan mutu kesihatan rakyat Malaysia melalui pemerkasaan serta peluasan penglibatan masyarakat dalam program kesihatan awam dengan menggabungkan mekanisma kerajaan sedia ada terutamanya di peringkat akar-umbi. Pelaksanaan inisiatif ini adalah melalui pendekatan yang agresif dengan penubuhanfunctional units yang terdiri daripada sukarelawan dari kalangan masyarakat di seluruh Negara yang akan bertindak sebagaihealth agent of change. Kumpulan sukarelawan ini dikenali sebagai Pasukan Gerak Sihat Malaysia atau singkatannya GSiM.

World Malaria Day 2014: WHO helps countries assess feasibility of eliminating malaria



 On World Malaria Day (25 April), WHO is launching a manual to help countries to assess the technical, operational and financial feasibility of moving towards malaria elimination.
WHO’s new guide, "From malaria control to malaria elimination: a manual for elimination scenario planning", will provide these countries with a comprehensive framework to assess different scenarios and timelines for moving towards elimination, depending on programme coverage and funding availability.
“Increased political commitment and the expansion of global malaria investments have saved some 3.3 million lives since 2000,” says Dr Margaret Chan, Director-General at WHO. ”Countries where malaria remains endemic now want to build on this success.”
